Mark Gertler: Spotlight display

Friday 16 February 2018Sunday 21 October 2018

Selection of work by influential 20th century British artist Mark Gertler. Born to Austrian-Jewish parents in London’s East End, Gertler studied at the Slade School of Art, before becoming a key figure in London’s avant-garde art scene between the wars. A group of works connected to his painting Merry-Go-Round 1916, brought together for the first time, shows how new research has led to important discoveries about this radical anti-war masterpiece. Early depictions of people in the Jewish East End, as well as a group of later works, also illustrate the tensions between his artistic, racial and social identities.
