Heidi Bucher

Wednesday 19 September 2018Sunday 09 December 2018

Survey exhibition of works by Swiss artist Heidi Bucher (1926-1993), well known for her latex casts of room interiors, objects, clothing and the human body, which she herself referred to as 'skinnings'. Includes large-scale latex skinnings, including her first 'room skin', Borg, 1976, a replica of the cold-store of a former butcher's shop, and a later interior moulding of a former psychiatric sanatorium, Small glass portal, Bellevue Kreuzlingen, 1988. The sculpture The Source, 1987, stands on the outdoor terrace, a vase appearing to float while a cascade of latex 'water' flows from its spout.

Also on show are a selection of films documenting her skinning process as well as the performance piece Bodyshells, Venice Beach, 1972. The first-floor gallery contains smaller works including the Glue House series, made between 1976-1983. Bucher was also captivated by notions of ephemerality, transformation and metamorphosis, ideas captured in several of her works, such as her latex costume-object Dragonfly Dress, 1976, and The Hatching of the Parquet Dragonfly, 1983.
