The Enchanted Interior

Saturday 12 October 2019Saturday 22 February 2020

Exploring nineteenth-century painting focusing on the depiction of the interior as a 'gilded cage' in which women are pictured as ornamental objects. Includes work by Pre-Raphaelite artists such as Edward Burne-Jones and William Holman Hunt shown alongside works by female peers such as Emma Sandys and Evelyn De Morgan, whose work challenges and subvert the idealisation of women as captive damsels or passive beauties. The show also includes contemporary work by contemporary artists such as Mona Hatoum and Fiona Tan highlighting the duality inherent in the interior, as a site that can be a sanctuary or a threat.
