The Enchanted Interior

Friday 13 March 2020Sunday 14 June 2020

Exhibition of oil paintings, watercolours, sculptures, films, installations, photography, prints and decorative art by artists including Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Frederic Leighton, JW Waterhouse, Whistler, Walter Crane, Max Ernst, Dorothea Tanning and Hayv Kahraman, exploring the recurring motif of female subjects in art, as depicted in enclosed, ornate interiors. This theme is prevalent in nineteenth-century British painting, with many Pre-Raphaelites and Orientalists showing a fascination with the so-called ‘gilded cage’. The exhibiion ranges from the high Victorian through to Art Nouveau, Aestheticism, Surrealism to contemporary art. Pre-Raphaelite paintings by artists such as Edward Burne-Jones and William Holman Hunt are shown alongside works by female peers such as Emma Sandys and Evelyn De Morgan, who challenge and subvert the idealisation of women as captive damsels or passive beauties. Contemporary artists include Mona Hatoum and Fiona Tan.
