Joana Vasconcelos: Beyond

Saturday 07 March 2020Sunday 03 January 2021

Sculpture by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos. The artist frequently uses items associated with domestic work and craft, employing traditional textile crafts as well as everyday industrial objects from saucepans to wheel hubs to comment from a feminist perspective on national and collective identity, cultural tradition and women's roles in society. Major works include the monumental 12-metre-long Valkyrie Marina Rinaldi (2014), made from multicoloured woolen crochet, which hangs suspended from the ceiling; Marilyn (2009-11), iconic oversized silver stilettos made from stainless-steel saucepans; and Pop Galo [Pop Rooster] (2016), a vast sculpture inspired by traditional Portuguese pottery. The piece is over nine-metres-high and covered by 17,000 glazed tiles. At dusk, Pop Galo becomes animated by 15,000 LED lights. Other Open air works also include Solitário [Solitaire] (2018), a seven-metre-high ring made of golden car wheel rims topped with a huge diamond crafted from crystal whisky glasses.
